Tariq Ziyad al-Bakri, a computer engineer, was born in Jerusalem in 1986. He graduated from Al-Ahliyya Amman University in Jordan, and upon his return to Palestine, the idea of documenting the Palestinian displaced villages materialized after he interacted with Palestinian refugees in Diaspora. He started the initiative “We were, and we are still” which is concerned with visual documentation in Palestine. The initiative focuses on documenting displaced villages in 1948 as well as Palestinian homes and landmarks that devolved to the occupiers. Each landmark is accompanied by their old photos, before the Nakba, to prove the Palestinians’ right to them. Al-Bakri has, so far, documented pictures and stories of many displaced villages all over Palestine, in addition to his project of oral documentation that he undertook in the diaspora camps with the generation that lived through Al Nakba.
He has monthly corners in Palestinian publications, and has held numerous exhibitions and seminars in Palestine, the Arab world and Europe.
Winner of the 2018 Jerusalem Prize for Culture and Creativity.
